Environmental savings
Project information
The Kinmuck Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is located in rural Aberdeenshire, approximately 16 kilometres southwest of Peterhead.
Its location was chosen for its proximity to the Kintore to Peterhead 275 kV overhead transmission line, enabling a convenient grid connection. SSEN, the grid operators, identified a need for grid-scale energy storage in this area, which influenced the site selection.
The BESS is designed to charge and discharge fully twice each day, storing zero-carbon renewable power when charging and displacing carbon-emitting generation when discharging. Based on current grid emissions intensity, the facility could save approximately 56,000 tonnes of carbon annually.
From a biodiversity perspective, the project aims to enhance the ecological value of the site. Measures include native woodland planting, wet meadow creation through overseeding retained grassland, and the introduction of bird and bat boxes.
